Sengstack Video Shooting Tips

1. List and describe two things you already knew.

It is important to get several shots from various angles. Getting wide and tight shots will enhance your story.

2. List and describe two things you learned for the first time.

You can lean forward or backward if zoom isn't working out for you. Using natural sound can give the audience a better sense of what is real within the story.

Shayna's Story

1. What is the role of the reporter's segues in this story?
  • The segues were mostly between pictures or videos and interviews. They worked well because they gave the story while still letting the interviewee tell their own side.
2. Why do you think she did not include a stand-up in the story?
  • A stand-up was not important to the story, there was no real place to do the stand-up that would've made sense. The information given by the narrator and the interview were all we needed to understand the story well.
3. What is the biggest surprise in the story?
  • The biggest surprise in the story was that Shayna was pregnant even before her fall and that she and the child both survived.
4. How does the story end with hope?

Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges, born in Mississippi in 1954, was one of the most groundbreaking children to walk the halls of her elementary school. She was the first black child to attend Frantz Elementary School, before that time it was an all white school. On her first day, many parents pulled their children out of school in protest of the new law that integrated the elementary.

New Rochester Children's Museum

Opening in 2012, is a new branch of the Children's Museum of Minnesota. Having been to the location in the Twin Cities, I think that this idea is one that is very important to pursue. The Children's Museum is a great place for young children to learn while they play. The Museum has acquired the proper donation money to open the new location in January or February of 2012. I think that this museum will bring a better sense of unity to the Rochester community.

Jonesboro Massacre

What Happened?

Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Goldne, 11, shot at their classmates and teachers on a brisk day in 1998, killing four students and a teacher. When they were caught, it turns out they had thirteen fully loaded firearms, a stolen caravan, and hunting gear. It was apparent that they would have tried to flee after the shots were fired because they also had camping gear and food in the van.

Who Did It?

Mitchell Johnson, age 13
Andrew Golden, age 11

Why?

This question has been asked many times but there has never been a straightforward answer given.

What Angle?

Opposite of Bob Dotson's report on NBC, a news reported could interview the children's teachers and parents. You might get a little more in depth description of the boys' previous actions that lead up to the shooting and find if their were any warning signs that people had overlooked.

Baby Angel

Summary-

Recently, a newborn baby was found wrapped in a garbage bag and stuffed in a tote bag with other knick-knacks, drowning in the Mississippi River. The mother is suspected to have given birth to the baby without any medical assistance and then thrown the child into the river; police are trying to find the mother's identity by the articles that were in the tote.

Reaction:

When I read this story, I found it horribly gruesome; how could somebody have the heart to just toss their newborn child into a river? The mother should have taken advantage of the state's safe haven policy and dropped the baby off, no questions asked at any hospital.

Criteria:

This story, out of the six criteria has:
Unusualness- New mothers don't usually throw their children into rivers
Timeliness- It happened very recently
Proximity- It happened in Minnesota

Missoni For Target

In the past, the store Target has collaborated with several high-end fashion designers, such as Isaac Mizrahi, Jean Paul Gaultier, and most recently, the Italian designer Missoni. The ladder combination has left Target's shelves empty and has even crashed the Target website a few times, due to so many people trying to get their hands on the new clothing. The designer's clothing is about 10 times cheaper at Target than other stores that carry the brand. Even celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Jessica Alba are looking forward to rocking the new looks. Personally, I love how Target gets people to their stores with clothing lines designed by people you would only get to see during Fashion Week in New York. Being in style has become much easier, due to the great ideas of Target!

Reaction to Online Gaming Article

Being an avid Facebook user myself, I have come across a few of the games that the article talks about, like Farmville. For me, personally, the games aren't all that fun and I've only ever played maybe one game on my entire time of being registered. But, I know that online gaming is attractive to a lot more people than me and that is how Facebook became so popular: it had things that the others didn't. Now that Google+ is trying to stay ahead of the curve with added gaming, seems a tad pathetic. If they want to attract more people, they have to show everyone what they have that nobody else does. One thing I like about Google+ is that it wouldn't notify you if someone had started to play a game or if they beat their high score. On Facebook, the news feed gets rather cluttered with all of the things I could really care less about. All in all, I think that if Google+ wants a piece of the social networking action, then go ahead, but they're going to have to step up their game.

9/11

Ten years after 9/11, there is still a huge threat of a terror attack in New York, but some residents seem unfazed. They feel that, ever since 2001, the police force has been on high alert and that they would be able to catch an attack earlier and keep the New Yorkers safe. People who lost family members to the attacks on September 11, 2001, want to spend the day remembering and honoring their loved ones instead of cowering in fear. Tourists and residents alike hope that everyone will respect the memorials and the fact that people lost husbands, wives, uncles aunts, and children ten years ago.

Fall Colors This Year

Most likely, you have paid witness to at least one of Minnesota's colorful changes from summer to autumn, but this year the fall will be even more spectacular. The Department of Natural Resources says that the festival of colors on trees through out the state might shine brighter this year due to several factors. The first cause being the fact that Mother Nature has blessed us for two years with plenty of rain during the growing season. Another cause is that we've had a pretty good balance of warm days and cool nights, this is a balance crucial to plant life. The DNR expects the colors to peak between late September and mid-October for us here in the metro.

Russian Plane Crash Kills Entire Hockey Team

On Wednesday, September 7th, a plane flying the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team, coaches, players and staff, to an international forum,  crashed and killed everyone aboard. Through the grief and sorrow that has swept Russia's hockey fans, the crash has called attention to the lack of air safety in Russia and other soviet republics. Investigators could not immediately give a reason to why the plane failed, but experts blame old aircraft, weak government controls and poor pilot training as well as a cost-cutting mentality that has infected the nation.

Ariel Freeman Interview

Throughout  her life, Ariel Freeman has had some ups and downs, but she still remains a positive person. She says that the best day of her life was moving back to Minnesota from Nebraska, where she had moved to be with family. With her spare time, Ariel likes to hang out with her friends. Everyone has their rough days and one of Ariel's was, over the summer, on August 28th she was in a car accident. On a more positive note, when asked about her favorite type of music, Ariel says that she loves all kinds of music, it just depends on the song.
